Locale
Set on the Carrabassett River, our sleepy mountain village of Kingfield is now home to little more than 1,000 residents, nearly identical to the size of the population when Hillholm was built. At the gateway to the mountains at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort and Bigelow Preserve, Kingfield is the last stop before the elevation starts climbing. Ski Magazine describes Kingfield as “the most beautifully preserved ski town east of Aspen.”

For the locavores among us, Maine boasts some of the best eating and drinking in the nation: just ask Bon Appétit magazine, which named Portland America’s Restaurant City of the Year. North of Portland’s bustling culinary scene, you’ll find plenty of gems in the mountains, including The Coplin Dinner House in Stratton for farm-to-table elegant plates. For more casual comfort food, check out Rolling Fatties and Longfellow’s in Kingfield. For your alpine start, don’t miss a stick-to-your-bones breakfast at The Woodsman. If you’re a beer fan following The Maine Beer Trail, don’t miss brews from Tumbledown Brewing in Farmington; and Ambition Brewing in Wilton.
